Through Guy’s Eyes – Say it Straight

Speak your truth

Last week, I mailed a YouTube interview between UK Channel 4 journalist Cathy Newman and Canadian psychologist, author and culture critic Professor Jordan Peterson.

You might already know that Peterson is gaining a lot of global attention; and not all of it has been good. In the interview in question, he makes some rather controversial statements about issues that, themselves, are causing a lot of discomfort right now.

I agree that it is of the utmost importance that we treat each other with respect and care. In a country like ours, this is all the more critical, especially given the hard work we’ve taken on to mend the rifts caused by an unscrupulous government. But I feel that we have become a nation that walks on eggshells, afraid to tell the truth because it might hurt someone’s sensibilities, make them feel excluded or cause offence. As a result, the real causes for concern are left unaddressed.

What’s the takeout here? As uncomfortable as hard debates can be, if issues are left unsaid they often fester and manifest themselves in other, even more unfavourable ways. That’s been our experience in the cultural transformation of over 130 corporate clients in 36 countries, where the nett outcomes of challenging the hard issues have, through rigorous measurements, been universally positive.

Let us show you how.
